How To Be A Successful Affiliate Marketer Part 2: Training and Knowledge

As an affiliate marketer (especially if you’re starting out), it can be incredibly difficult to find legitimate training that will help you succeed. Having been an affiliate marketer for three years now, I can tell you that there are a lot of junk products out there created just to take your money.

In fact, I have yet to come across any other market so full of scammy products than the Make Money Online (MMO) niche.

And if you don’t possess much knowledge of internet marketing to begin with, it can be very easy to get persuaded into buying a product that sounds good. I have heard horror stories of people spending thousands of dollars on IM products/training, only to end up in debt and nothing to show for all their hard work.

I was lucky when I first started out, as the first training I ever invested in was Wealthy Affiliate. The information I gained there provided me with a solid foundation in affiliate marketing, and helped me figure out how to evaluate IM products down the road. Now Wealthy Affiliate didn’t teach me everything I know about IM, but it did provide me with enough info to build my internet business.

In this article, I’m going to discuss training, and how it should factor into your online business.

The Purpose of IM Training

First of all, if you have no idea how affiliate marketing works, you’re going to have to invest in some form of training. Yes, you can try to get free information from places like Warrior Forum or Traffic Planet, but without some coherent focus for your efforts, you’re going to get overwhelmed and ultimately fail (or take longer to make money than you need to).

If you select the right training resource (such as Wealthy Affiliate), you will have a blueprint to follow, and a clear step-by-step method of building a website and generating some income.

That being said, there is no one way to become successful at affiliate marketing. There are a variety of ways to build a successful internet business. But what’s important early on is picking ONE WAY to follow through with. This way you wont get distracted by shiny objects (e.g. other MMO products) and you will have a clear end goal in site.

Once you’ve picked a way or model for affiliate marketing, it is time to put in some hard work and follow that model to completion.

How to Select the Right IM Training

This may seem obvious to most people, but its worth mentioning because of how many people get scammed these days: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

This statement is especially true with anything IM related, where 70% of the industry tries to sell the dream (you know the 7 figure income, the nice car, the office on the beach, etc.).  And all for the bargain price of $67!

If you come across a training resource that claims it will help you generate $1000+ per hour with just the push of the button, STAY AWAY. Such products do not exist. No matter how ingenious the idea sounds or how tempting it will be, I can personally assure you that becoming successful online requires hard work and dedication. It is NOT something that happens overnight or even in a month or two.

Try to select training that shows you HOW to do something. It should breakdown exactly what the training resource will show you and how it works. I wouldn’t rely too much on screenshots of someone’s earnings, as these can be manipulated easily with Photoshop. But if the training sounds like it is comprehensive and informative and NOT filled with hype, then it may be worth investing in.

Also look out for a money-back guarantee. If it turns out the training is not what you expected, then make sure you have some way of getting your money back.

Even better is if you can get someone reputable to recommend a product. This is obviously not an option for everyone, but if someone you know is successful online already, then they would have a pretty good idea of what training works.

My recommendation if you have no idea where to begin is to start with Wealthy Affiliate (no affiliate link). This is my recommendation for those starting out.

Supplementing Your Education With Other Training Resources

However, you also shouldn’t be so closed minded as to ignore other helpful resources. Even if you pick one way of doing affiliate marketing, you should still keep your eyes open for other ways related to that model to help you succeed. For instance, one of the models presented at Wealthy Affiliate is finding a niche, selecting keywords, and then building a website and social presence related to that niche.

This is one way of generating income online, and is the model I currently use.

However, in my time as an affiliate marketer, I have purchased other products related to that model to help increase my knowledge in that area. In fact, most of my success can be attributed to combining about two or three different resources into one coherent model for making money.

Following the criteria in the previous section, I had no problem buying a new IM product every few months to further my knowledge and help me look at affiliate marketing from another perspective. Not only did it give me more knowledge in IM, it gave me a more comprehensive and resilient business plan. I was able to pick and choose elements from one training resource and combine them with another training resource.

I could recommend other training resources at this point, but to be honest, I haven’t come across any good ones recently that I’ve tried which I would recommend. The previous resources I invested in were early on are now a little out-dated with all the Google changes. And its not my style to just promote something for the sake of promoting something on this blog (although I’ve got my eye on a really good resource coming out in about a month).

However, if you’re looking for something to supplement your education with, my free newsletters (on the right hand side) may be something you want to sign-up to if you’re looking for a simple and easy-to-follow way of making affiliate income.

Also, please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I’m not saying to give up on a particular model to try out a new one. I’m saying to combine similar training resources regarding one model into one comprehensive plan.

Supplementing Your Education with FREE Information

With how fast the internet changes, it is a good idea to stay on top of things at blogs and forums. Blogs and forums can be a source of great information because they are updated in real-time, and often reflect what going on currently in IM (at least the good ones do).

One thing that I do is spend at least 30 min to an hour each week checking out whats going on in the blogosphere. Whether its the latest webinar at Wealthy Affiliate, or a new article from an IM leader I trust, I am always seeking new information. Not only does it help me get outside the projects that Im currently on, it helps get me thinking of new ways to do things and forging connection between what I read and what I do.

Some good blogs I occasionally check out for IM info:

potpiegirl.com

Matts Marketing Blog

Ethical IM

Some good forums to check out for info:

warriorforum.com

trafficplanet.com

As an affiliate marketer, it is important to constantly update your knowledge from legitimate sources. Always look for new ways to improve your business, and constantly relate what your read with what you do.

Conclusion

Once you’ve been doing affiliate marketing for a while, you will learn the difference between legitimate good information and scammy bad information. You will naturally be able to figure out whether a particular product/training resource will improve your business or waste your time.

I’ve put together this article to help you make these distinctions early on, but you still need to think clearly about a product before investing on it.

Definitely don’t invest in a training resource because it will get you X amount of money in X amount of time. Invest in it because it will help you as a marketer and show you new ways of doing things.
